On Mother Kelly's Doorstep

BBC NEWS | Politics | Letter reveals Kelly's approval
Ruth Kelly, or to give her her full title, the beleaguered Ruth Kelly, is the foremost Catholic in the government. She was appointed as Education Secretary despite having no expertise or background in the area. Her main claim to fame is her prominent membership of the loony Opus Dei, a Roman Catholic organisation that follows a strict Vatican line on contraception, embryo research, cloning and abortion - an interesting conundrum when you are the minister in control of the research budget.
Presumably, Ms Kelly would be happy for any of her many children to be taught by the convicted sex offender to whom she wrote last year. The gist of her letter is: "You've been a naughty boy, but you've said sorry, so we'll hear no more about it." This is, of course, the classic response of Catholic institutions when they discover evidence of child abuse. The events at Ampleforth, Britain's most prestigious Catholic school, is only the latest in a long line of similar cases.
So we shouldn't be surprised at Ms Kelly's response. She's obviously practising Christian forgiveness.

Not sure that I agree that poor Ruthie is the foremost Catholic is government. Hasn't our glorious leader expressed a desire to convert?

Presumably Kelly is taking "pro-active steps to deal with the shortage of teachers" and will soon be lauded for her "forward thinking". I was aghast to see that someone convicted of downloading pornographic images of little boys was allowed to carry on teaching as long as he only taught girls - perhaps those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving will soon be allowed to continuie driving but only in Reliant Robins?

Yes, but hasn't converted yet, at least officially.
I don't see how RK can survive this. Maybe she should just go back to playing with treasury forecasts, which she is obviously much better at than running the nation's education service.

All the comment I've heard so far suggests that she will survive this - amazing as it may seem.

WV - xwili - It has ceased to be! Bobbited?

Leave Bobbitt out of this - I'm sure Ruth wouldn't want it flapping about.
I have a feeling she will go, but slowly and reluctantly a la Blunkett.

The whole sorry saga seems to be picking up speed - certainly locally, at least two people have been identified as working in SE schools while being on the SO List.

The radio this morning sugegested the DfES have 100 people working solely on identifying offenders with approved status...
